As the full time whistle blew at Aggborough on April 17, 2010 – the realisation set in that Boro had finally achieved promotion to the Football League. They had waited 14 seasons for this moment after initially being denied promotion in 1996 due to issues with the Broadhall Way ground and the League’s strict compliance rules.
This time around, there was nothing to prevent Boro joining the Football League for the first time in the clubs history – as their 93 points made it mathematically impossible for promotion rivals Luton or Oxford to catch them.
The official Blue Square winners trophy was not at Aggborough that day – although the Boro fans had already made preparations of their own and presented a makeshift cardboard and tin foil trophy to the team at full time.
The official trophy was presented the following Saturday at the final game at home to York City.
